Simple tools, meaningful communication

This course shows staff how to use switches, sensory stories and simple Assistive Technology to build confident communication opportunities for pupils with PMLD and SLD.

The emphasis is on predictable story structures, motivating sensory moments and purposeful switch use that helps pupils take part and enjoy shared communication.

Optional GDPR compliant digital tools are offered to support planning and reduce workload, introduced calmly and clearly.

Everything is practical, classroom-ready and shaped by recognised sensory story principles.

What the course covers

  • creating clear, predictable structures for sensory stories

  • using switches purposefully within stories, songs and routines

  • simple AAC modelling that feels natural and easy to repeat

  • using Assistive Technology tools such as switches, iClick and low-tech boards

  • safe use of optional digital planning tools

  • practical strategies for pupils with PMLD and SLD

  • building staff confidence through guided practice

Session one: Staff training

A 90-minute, in-person session with practical elements staff can use straight away.

Covers:

  • how sensory stories and play support communication

  • creating repeated refrains and simple, predictable steps

  • using switches purposefully within stories and routines

  • simple Assistive Technology tools that work in class

  • safe use of optional digital planning tools

  • starting a sensory story with embedded Assistive Technology

Between Sessions

Staff refine their sensory story and deliver it in class using the tools introduced.

A follow-up visit is booked within two weeks to share new ideas and build momentum.

Session two: In class coaching 

A 90 minute session supporting your team to deliver a high-quality sensory story with Assistive Technology and AAC appropriate for your class.

Includes:

  • joint setup and planning

  • staff-led sensory story delivery and learning activities

  • in-class switch and AAC support

  • in-class Assistive Technology coaching

  • optional digital refinements

Post Training

Up to two 30 minute or one 60 minute training sessions on an AT or AAC topic of your choice, such as:

  • creating simple AAC core boards for printing or device use

  • editing in Grid 3 or Grid for iPad

  • editing in TD Snap

  • using multi-message voice output switches

  • creating an Assistive Technology wish list for your class
